The Runner
THE RUNNER
“(Pant, Pant, Pant)” I wiped the sweat off my forehead. I peered around the corner and took a sigh of relief.
“(Pant, Pant, Pant)” I wiped the sweat off my forehead. I peered around the corner and took a sigh of relief.
Their going to find me… I thought.
Just gotta stay on my toes.
Oh. Why am I running, you ask? I am a foster child who always gets into ‘trouble.’ I’ve been to; hmm, lets see, about 16 foster homes since I was six, and I’m only 12. But the people that I am running from are heartless freaks, much like me, minus the heartless part. I am a freak on the run. Oh, and by the way, my name is Alex, short for Alexandrea, not that it matters. I could just change my name tomorrow, or maybe right now.
My life has been a series of hatred and gloom. All starting since my parents died. I ran away from my dumb aunt and lived on the streets near the sewers. At least I had food and water. And some friends, if you count rats… then a lady rode by, fancy and all, and picked me up from the streets. She took me to an orphanage and kept me there until someone picked me up. I stayed there for about a year until someone finally had the heart to choose me for a foster daughter.
“ HELP! PLEASE SOMEONE!” I cried my tears out. “ PLEASE!” trust me, this whole ‘cry and kick’ thing is FAKE! I’m just trying to get attention. I just don’t want to be that ‘perfect’ and ‘prissy’ girl that never gets into trouble. It’s all part of my attempt of going to juvie. You see, juvie is much better than living on the streets. I get food, water, and my own room (finally!). Sadly its not working, yet I’ve been threatened multiple times by it… anyway, to get on with this journal, I’m just going to remind you once. I am a bad girl.
So now to carry on with the matter at hand. Oh, right- RUNNING.
Now, I pick up the journal and start running again. I find a McDonalds to hide in.
Suddenly I realize- I’m starving. I start digging through my pockets and finally find a five dollar bill. (I found it on a street corner just yesterday) I walk up to the counter and begged,
“just give me a burger and a small soda.” I saw the look in her eyes and she was staring at me like she knew what situation I was in. she handed me a small paper bag and She whispered in my ear,
“the fries are on the house.”
I handed her the crumpled up bill and gave her a quick smile, and turned towards the door, and left to eat my lunch. My awesome, five-dollar lunch. And I knew I wouldn’t be this happy in a long time. So I sat at my corner near the sewer and enjoyed my burger, soda, and free fries.
So as I walked around the corner to throw away my lunch, I see them- COPS! I start sprinting towards the nearest dumpsters and threw my coat around the nearest corner and the cops followed it, as I quickly crept away.
“phew!” I said, as I breathed a sigh of relief. I looked around the corner, scared (a familiar situation). So I ran to my ‘home’. Alone. And just as it starts to get chilly, I have no coat. And just as I think that it can’t get any worse, it starts to RAIN. So I pick up a newspaper that was left on a bench, and put it over my head, and run to 213 Madisyn avenue, a pigsty, just waiting for pigs.

The Forest of Life: FINALE!!!
When the bonfire started, Aquafina went in disguise to it. She sat there for a while, finally pulling a piece of meat and a stick out of her bag. She stuck the meat on the stick, and thrust her stick in the flames, purposefully putting it in the biggest flame. Her plan worked, and as she pulled out the stick, it caught fire. Pretending to be surprised, Aquafina jumped up, and hopped away from the fire, towards the houses. People quickly lost interest, and turned back to the fire. Aquafina smiled to herself as she used the flames to light the closest house on fire.
Emerando spotted the flames first. Then Altomia. Suddenly Emerando stood up.
“I’m going to save them.” He mumbled, trying to muster a confident voice when really he was shaking with fear. Altomia lunged and grabbed him before he could run. As soon as she grabbed him, he fell to the ground, shaking and sobbing on the cave floor.
“It’s okay,” Altomia said, patting Emerando on the back “Everything is going to be okay.”
Aquafina looked behind her at the ruins of the village. Just a half an hour before she had been laughing alongside the villagers. The bonfire had been blazing, the village alive with light and beauty. Yet Aquafina was not thinking of any of that. She was thinking of how the mission was going, and if she should have taken some food before burning the village down.
Emerando kicked up some ash with the tip of his boot. It was morning, and Emerando, Altomia, and Elmerita had taken a little field trip to the ruins of Emerando’s village. Emerando could barely recognize the bonfire pit where he and Elmerita had spent so many nights laughing and playing. The fire had left no survivors, no traces of civilization, nothing. Ash covered bones littered the ground, and the stench of smoke filled the air. Altomia knelt down and picked up something. It was a small metal toy soldier. The rifle had melted to a stub, but Elmerita still thought it a useful chew toy. Emerando looked at the horizon. The sky was gray. It seemed as if the weather corresponded with Emerando’s innermost thoughts.
The life seemed to drain from Emerando’s eyes as he neared the ruin of where he had once lived. If it had seemed ash covered before the fire, this ruin must have been pure midnight. Altomia stepped forth and put her arm around Emerando’s shoulder.
“We have to save this place from destruction.” Said Emerando.
“I agree.” Answered Altomia.
Emerando looking genuinely surprised, knelt down to pick Elmerita off the street, where she had fallen asleep.
“Really? I thought this would be harder.” Said Emerando.
“No.” Said Altomia with a stony cold look on her face. “This is not a matter in which I care about my own personal safety.”
The two were silent for a while. The breeze blew back Altomia’s hair so that it showed her furrowed brow. Finally, Altomia spoke.
“If we are to catch them in the act we have to leave now. We have everything we need. After all, I brought my bow, and we don’t need much else."
The Forest of Life: Part 4
Altomia raced back to her village. Her white flowing dress and headscarf concealed her physical features and flaming red hair, but Altomia still worried about being seen. She went back along paths that were hidden in trees or long stems of grass. She made it to her house without being seen. She entered the tailor shop through the back door and headed to her room.
Altomia grabbed her game bag (she occasionally went out to kill a deer or two) and started filling it up with things she would need to survive in the wilderness: a hunting knife, a bow and arrow, a small pumpkin to ward off witches, dried apples, three warm blankets, three bedrolls, three pillows, a gallon of water, a compass, a map of the area, and sewing supplies. All that was left to do was wait. Altomia laid down and went to sleep. She had a long day ahead of her.
The next morning, as light was just breaking through the dense greenery of Aldold, Altomia crept out of her small village house. She tiptoed past her parents bedroom and tried not to trip over anything in the dimly lit hallway. She sneaked along the well-worn path to the pond that connected to Emerando’s village. When she finally got there, Emerando was waiting, with Elmerita in his arms, her tiny body cradled against his. The three said nothing as they hurried towards the green hills in the distance.
As the travelers wore on through the shrubbery of Aldold, Altomia said, “Have you ever considered that we might never return to our villages?”
“I guess not.” Replied Emerando, looking up from Elmerita.
The two stopped talking for a time, only stopping to say things like, ‘There’s the hills in the distance.’ or, ‘We’re almost at the beginning of the forest on the hills.’ This silence ended when they finally entered the forest. Emerando gasped as he looked around and said, “I’ve never seen anything so beautiful in my entire life.”
The forest was so green, it was hard to look at and the trees so utterly majestic and amazing that neither Altomia nor Emerando could move, much less speak for a long time. Even Elmerita stopped whimpering for a while. There were clearings in the wood occasionally, beautiful clearings, ones with wildflowers and tall grass that brushed Altomia’s skirts so much that she had to lift them up when she walked across the clearings. There was moss everywhere, and it covered so much of the forest tree roots that no one could see the dirt beneath them.
This calmness only lasted for so long, as they had to find a place to stay the night, since the trip had taken most of the day, and the sun was setting. Both Emerando and Altomia started to search for the perfect spot. Finally they found it, in a cave overlooking the meadow from which they had come. It was sheltered from the wind and had a small trickling waterfall from which to drink.
As soon as they had settled down to sleep, they heard a noise. It was a faint laughter, which became louder and louder. As it came closer, Altomia could see figures, flying through the night. Hags. They flew on their leathery black wings, that were tattered and torn.
They swooped through the cool wind, and yelled “ My lovelies, come come. We be the Hags of the Hill monsters of the Forest of Life. You disturb our peace, We will tear you limb from limb!”
“Perfect. Hags. I should have known they would come for us.” Muttered Altomia.
“What do you mean?” Asked Emerando.
“Hags are known to roam these woods at this time. Most people think it’s folklore, but a few people know the truth.” Said Altomia.
As soon as she had said this, one of the hags landed at the mouth of the cave. She neatly folded her fleshy, torn wings, and began to slowly creep towards Altomia and Emerando.
The hag and her brethren were about to reach Altomia, Emerando, and Elmerita, when they all heard a creaking. Altomia sneaked a look past the gang of hags and saw something that scared her. All the trees in the forest had started to move. They crawled like spiders towards the hags. As soon as the trees got close enough, they wrapped their huge branchy arms around the hags and each tree pushed them, screaming, into their massive trunks. Altomia, Emerando, and Elmerita were cowering in the corner. The trees turned their backs on the three, apparently not interested in their puny forms. The trees sank back into the ground, and the rest of the night, was silent.
Aquafina and her crew were approaching Emtolia. They crossed the border in the early morning, when everyone was still asleep. They closed in on a small sleepy village, the one nearest to the border. They entered a small tavern, which had one beggar in it. As Aquafina sat down the beggar saw a glimpse of the badge of the Queen that she had hidden in her tunic.
He pointed to it and yelled "Aldoldians! Queen's guards!”
The bartender pulled an empty wine bottle from under the counter and flung it at Aquafina’s head, missing her by a narrow margin. Aquafina and her crew pulled out their knives, and before anyone could say a word, they had the bartender, the beggar, and the bartender’s wife, who had just appeared from upstairs, against the wall with a knife at each of their throats. Aquafina gave the go ahead, and three voices were silenced that night. They buried the corpses in the backyard, and no one suspected a thing.
When Emerando woke up the next morning, he woke up to the smell of cooking and wildflowers. He looked around and momentarily panicked, for he was alone in the cave. Then he noticed that a wall of pebbles that had been in the back of the cave the night before was gone, in it’s place a curtain of wildflowers and lemongrass. He crawled out of bed and passed through the curtain, to find another room. This room looked bright, for every square inch was decorated with flowers gathered from the meadow. In the center of the room sat Altomia, Elmerita in her arms. She had made a fire, and was roasting a small bird carcass on it.
“Morning sunshine,” She said, without looking up. “Do you like what I’ve done with the place? I woke up early and The wall looked hollow, so I knocked it out. You’re a sound sleeper, but Elmerita isn’t. She got hungry fast.”
Emerando sat down next to Altomia and said “I love this room. It’s beautiful. Can I have some?” He asked, gesturing towards the meat on the spit.
Altomia nodded, and Emerando ate.
The three assassins planned their attack on the village. It had to be tonight, because there was to be a big bonfire, and people would all leave their houses. It was the perfect plan. All they had left to do was wait…
The afternoon in The Forest Of Life was uneventful. Altomia wove blankets out of lemongrass, and Emerando spent the better part of the day chasing a goat that bit him all the time.
After all of this was done and Elmerita was in bed, Altomia and Emerando sat at the edge of the cave to talk. It was twilight, and even at a distance Emerando could see the bonfire in his village. He looked at it longingly, as if a small part of him wanted to be next to it, laughing and telling stories. Altomia seemed to sense this and reached her arm out to encircle his shoulders. He didn’t stop her.
The Forest of Life: Part 3
Aquafina and her crew were almost at the border. They were nearing in on it, but they wouldn’t be able to cross it just yet. They needed supplies. They had to stop in one of the smallest border towns in Aldold. It had only 60 people in the whole town. The three girls entered the village. People cleared a way for them upon seeing the royal crest on their shields. They stayed in a small tavern, but for the rest of the day went about trying to find the things they needed. They went to the gruff blacksmith for more knives. They went to the baker for bread, and the grocer for fruits. Then they went to the tailor.
As the guards entered the tailor’s shop, they looked surprised to see who was at the counter. A girl of about thirteen with flaming red hair was sitting behind the counter. No one in Aldold had red hair. The girl looked up. Her hair was wet. Her eyes were a brilliant blue.
“Aldold Legendary Tailors, how can I help you?” Said Altomia, sounding bored.
“We need tunics and leggings. All of them we need in black.” Responded Aquafina.
Altomia looked up from her book. She peered at the girls with a newfound curiousity.
“Are you all going into Emtolia? Don’t you know that it’s the witches hiding place? It’s home to all types of odd magical creatures.” After saying this, Altomia shuddered. She hated recite all this peasant nonsense (although there were a few witches in Emtolia), but otherwise they might become suspicious.
“I’m afraid our mission is classified information.” Aquafina said.
Altomia went back to her book, looking once again disinterested in the world around her. After reading a few pages she went into the back room to make the clothing the girls asked for. She came out with the things and Aquafina and the girls walked out. As Ampathia walked out, something dropped from the folds of her dress.
The girls walked out, paying it no mind. Altomia saw it. As soon as the girls were out of sight, Altomia flew to the door and knelt to pick whatever it was up. It was a folded piece of paper. She looked around before slowly opening it up. The paper was small, with delicate handwriting on it. It said.. what was that? Map? It said Map of Ellosberg and beneath that there was a drawing, clearly a map of a town. A town that Altomia was sure was the capitol of Emtolia. A big red X was drawn over the palace. Those girls were full-bred assassins. Altomia had to warn Emerando. His village might be the first on their list.
Altomia raced toward Emerando’s village. She stopped at the border, waiting for him. He met her there a few minutes later.
“You and Elmerita are in trouble. There are guards of the queen in my village and they are going into Emtolia. Your village might be the first stop on their quest to assassinate the Black Claw. Life as you know it may cease to exist!” Altomia blurted out.
“We need to run away.” Emerando said.
“Yes.” Replied Altomia, “There’s are many deserted forests in Aldold. We can take Elmerita there. My parents won’t even remember me! We can run away tomorrow for all I care! I can have all the supplies we need and we can raise Elmerita in the forest!”
“That’s perfect. Meet me here tomorrow at the break of dawn with the stuff. We’ll go that way.” Emerando gestured towards a few green hills covered in trees in the distance that stood proud inside the border of Aldold. Altomia nodded and ran off to gather things that she would bring.
Emerando headed toward his house, and entered it slowly. The floorboards creaked and awakened Elmerita, who started crying. Emerando immediately ran to her side and picked her up, placing her warm body against his, soothing her. She stopped crying. He bundled her up and carried her outside.
“See those hills over there?” Emerando said to her, pointing at the hills where Altomia had suggested they run away. “That’s where we’ll go tomorrow. We’ll leave this place forever, and never look back.”
Elmerita seemed to comprehend, and pointed to the hills.
The Forest of Life: Part 2
Altomia lived in a small town on the outskirts of Aldold. She had wild red hair, which was odd considering everyone in Aldold had blond hair. She had amazingly blue eyes that were said to heal cuts. From her window she could see another tiny town, but this one on the outskirts of Emtolia. She was told never to go there, for all Emtolians were violent and deceitful people. None the less, Altomia had to go dangerously close to the village to fetch water. That little pond was where Altomia first spotted Emerando.
Emerando was a citizen of Emtolia, though he thought Aldold looked so much more beautiful. The town he lived in was just inside Emtolia, and it relied heavily on the nearby city as a food source. He had learned to go to fish at the pond on the border so that no city had leverage over him. On one such fishing outing he spotted Altomia. He knew instantly that they were going to be friends.
Altomia had let her hair out that day and Emerando could not see her face, but he knew she was no one he knew. Of course, that was easy, considering Altomia was the only one with red hair for miles. Emerando walked over to the other side of the pond. He was in Aldold territory. He tapped her on the shoulder. Surprised, Altomia looked up from her bucket in the water.
“Ahhhhhhh! Who are you? Are you an Emtolian? If so, get away from me!” Atomia took a step back after she said this. Without knowing it, she stepped back into the pond. She made a huge splash as she fell into the murky water. Emerando jumped in after her.
As soon as Altomia saw Emerando in the water with her, Altomia ducked under the water and swam away.
“Relax.” Emerando said, after she had resurfaced. “I won’t harm you. Not every Emtolian is like that you know. I just came over to say hi.” After he said this, he got out of the water and offered his hand to Altomia. “Need help?” He asked.
Altomia took his hand warily and pulled herself out of the water. They both sat by the water’s edge. Altomia was shivering. They both sat there in silence.
After a while Altomia said, “If anyone sees us sitting next to each other we would both be executed.”
“I know.” Emerando responded.
“I have never been so close to the border.”
“I’ve never been inside Aldold. It’s pretty here.”
Emerando looked over at his village, his eyes stopping to rest on the house closest to the border. It was blackened by years of house fires.
“Is that your house?” Altomia asked.
“Yes. I live by myself in the old clunker. That is, me and my baby sister Elmerita. That’s the way it’s been for a while. I got a deadbeat dad and my mom died when she gave birth to Elmerita.
“I’m sorry.” Said Altomia.
“Yeah, well, things happen for a reason, as they say.”
“That doesn’t mean they’re easy to deal with.”
Emerando didn’t answer. Then a baby started crying in the distance. Emerando got up quickly.
“I better be going. Elmerita wants her food. I’ll meet you here tomorrow at the same time.” He said.
“What makes you think I’ll come back?” Altomia said, but Emerando had already started walking away.
The Forest of Life: Part 1
The Forest Of Life
The two kingdoms of Aldold and Emtolia were both beautiful. Their cities had towering buildings that cast cool shadows over the streets. They were ruled by twins, Queen Amarita of Aldold and Queen Ellspento of Emtolia. They were mortal enemies. Queen Ellspento was also known by her nickname, the Black Claw, and Queen Amarita by her’s, the Pale Beauty.
It was well known that Queen Ellspento would have done anything to get rid of Queen Amarita. Queen Ellspento had a rather small empire and wished to expand it. That is why it was no surprise when The Pale Beauty received a death threat from The Black Claw.
This was not a run of the mill death threat. It was a painting. A beautiful painting really. It was black and white, featuring a chessboard where many of the pieces were already scattered across the board. The Pale Beauty actually thought it was an offer of peace, until her head guard informed her otherwise. In the painting the black queen had just placed the white king in a checkmate.
The Pale Beauty’s head guard was named Aquafina, a name that had come over with the first traders. She was a pretty girl, with pale skin and straight white-blond hair. She was about 15, though not precisely. Her best feature were her eyes. They were a piercing violet that seemed to hypnotize everyone. They had hints of blue around the irises. She was an orphan, left at the castle gates as an infant. The previous head guard had taught her everything she knew, and by now she was pretty lethal.
All these traits contributed to The Pale Beauty’s decision to send Aquafina to kill, not capture, The Black Claw. Aquafina was to take her most skilled girls with her. She only took two other girls, Ampathia and Amperadia. Only three girls. A lucky number in Aldold.
The girls set off at midnight the next day, with daggers hidden in the folds of their flowing dresses. They had to journey through many a city before they even reached the border of Emtolia. It took a day to reach the outskirts of the city. They had crossed through the gleaming city and into the countryside. The countryside was fairly big, and no one could cross it if they were as exhausted as the three girls. They made camp and prepared for a long needed rest.
